Cover Design at full size in black and white

Finished storyboard, scanned into your computer and printed out to full size

Two full sized black and white drawings from your storyboard.

One full sized color piece

Two half-sized color studies (working towards your final media choice)

LOOK AT BOOKS - Pick out two books to evaluate for continuity of color palette, design, style, plot, movement, etc.

Week 3 - Thursday, July 7th - #6 Class Homework

LOOK AT BOOKS - Select one book that has artwork rendered in a way you admire and one book with artwork rendered the way you hope to achieve (can be same title). Also, bring in books by Charles Vess for discussion of his work.

Complete two full sized black and white drawings from your storyboard.

Complete two half-sized color studies (can be the same or different images)

Week 3 - Tuesday, July 7th - #5 Class - Homework

REQUIRED:

LOOK AT BOOKS - Bring a book with a strong style, which you can discuss and would be very different if it were done in a different style.

Start reading Nodelman, Chapter 9

Pick 2 illustrations from your storyboard and create half-sized black and white finished sketches in full value, planning out your light source and using other design choices to define your style

NOT REQUIRED, BUT KEEP WORKING ON:

Completing and tightening up your storyboard

Working on your characters

Week 2 - Thursday, July 2nd - #4 Class - Homework

Continue finishing maquettes and photographing them.

Photograph your characters for the line up. I'd like this to be fairly tight.

Use line up photos to create a new line up of your main characters (showing front, back and side view of each character)

Make 5 copies of this new line up and do color studies

Continue working on your storyboards - start using the actual templates. If the template dimensions are different from your book, create a custom template. Apply your favorite/key layouts and work off of them.

LOOK AT BOOKS - Choose two books which have the color palette you think you will use

Choose colored pencils which reflect those color palettes

Read Chapter 3 of Perry Nodelman: "Style as Meaning"

Bring in your color swatches
